Homemade Dog Biscuits

Nov 24, 2014   Shawn   Pet Friendly Recipes

This holiday season, as you pull out your cookie cutters and favorite holiday cookie recipes, why not whip up some homemade dog treats for your dog and their pup friends.  This is a simple base recipe that can be modified based on other ingredients that you know your dog will enjoy.  Have fun with the recipe and biscuit making, but be sure your family and friends don't make the mistake of thinking that you made the batch for them!

  • 2½ cups whole wheat flour (see note below for substitutions)
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 egg

(NOTE: some dogs are allergic to flour/wheat. if you want to make these wheat free, you can use rice flour of coconut flour as a replacement. they will work, but might change the consistency a bit. )

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Preheat oven to 350F
  2. In a large bowl combine flour, baking powder, and the egg. Add peanut butter, water, honey and stir until you have stiff dough. The dough becomes very firm and sticky. you may need to use your hands.
  3. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough about ½ inch thick and use a cookie cutter to make fun shapes. the treats barely spread and rise.
  4. Bake for 20 minutes, until golden. (NOTE: My first batch, I let go for 25 minutes, because I didn't think they were "done" but I guess they continue to cook once you pull them out of the oven and they became really "done" so I stuck with 20 minutes on next batches.)
  5. Store in an airtight container and share with your pup.
